The exhibition is part of an ongoing program of the Goethe-Institute Indonesia, which focuses on the topic of “Cultural Heritage”. Prince Diponegoro is one of Indonesias most remarkable national heroes. Most present-day Indonesians remember him as an early nineteenth-century freedom fighter who led the Javanese in their fight against Dutch colonialism known as the Java War. Others see the Java War leader primarily as a Yogyakarta prince whose image can be found in classrooms throughout Indonesia alongside other national heroes.

The audio tour revisits the extraordinary story of Diponegoro and takes you on a journey to experience the changing public reception of Indonesias national hero and visually explore his role in art history – from Raden Saleh to the present.
